20 Schools closed across Queensland for wet weather

More than twenty schools in Queensland have been closed according to the Department of Education, including six in the Scenic Rim region.

On Tuesday morning Aratula State School, Boonah State and Boonah State High School, Cedar Creek State School, Maroon State School and The Kooralbyn International School were all announced closed due to the wet weather.

Boonah State School released a statement saying the school had been closed on Tuesday.

“With the safety of families and staff paramount, the school has been closed today,” the statement said.

“Sorry for the late inconvenience, please keep your children safe at home or collect them if they have already arrived.

“A decision about tomorrow will be made later today, stay safe everyone.”

Boonah State High followed suit, advising parents if their child was already at school to collect them if it was safe to do so.

The school said minimal staff would remain on site to supervise those unable to be picked up.

A spokesman from the Department of Education said the situation was rapidly changing and people on the ground were working with local communities.

“The Department of Education aims to keep communities informed with the most up-to-date information about the status of schools in areas affected by significant weather events,” he said

“That’s why the department maintains a publicly available website that is updated and populated with school closure information as soon as the information is verified.

“Information on Queensland state school closures can be found at https://closures.det.qld.gov.au/

“The school closures website is dynamic and contains live updates and is the best source of up-to-date school information for Queensland communities and the media.

“Flood-affected schools will update parents through their usual communication channels regarding the closures, alternate arrangements and reopening dates.”
