A unique association of generational players

VIGORO has been a popular sport for women in the Fassifern since the mid 1930’s.

Play lapsed during World War II and after this time players travelled to the Ipswich Vigoro Association (in the back of a cattle truck as the story goes), to play our game which can be likened to the exciting T20 cricket.

The Fassifern Ladies Vigoro Association was established in 1979 through the determination of local player Naurelle Kirkman, to accommodate the growing number of women interested in playing the game.

Naurelle became the inaugural President and shared her love for vigoro with the Fassifern community.

Naurelle continued her involvement in Fassifern and Queensland Vigoro and was awarded Life Memberships for her contribution to both Fassifern and Queensland Associations.

The sport flourished in the district and Fassifern produced many talented players.

At its peak from the 1990 to 2000, the Association fielded four junior teams and eight senior teams.

The games were played all over the district and players looked forward to the road trips together to play at Maroon, Rosevale, Warrill View, Kalbar, Milbong, Mt Alford and Aratula.

Games were also played at the local High School, The Outlook and the Association’s current home at Coronation Park.

Senior teams over the years have included Maroon, High School, Cobras, Mt Alford, Aratula, Rosevale, Dodgers, Commercial and Boonah. Junior teams have included Mt Alford, Maroon, Kalbar Hurricanes, Kalbar Wildcats, Convent, Krushers and Boonah.

Fast forward to 2021 and vigoro is still the dominant female summer sport in the Fassifern with three junior teams (Rebels, Terminators and Funtastics) and four senior teams (Kalbar, Funtastics, Aussie Terrors and Rebels) gracing the fields every Saturday.

Fassifern teams have won numerous State Titles and individuals have gained selection in State and National teams over the years.

The longevity of the Association has led to the special situation where many players are now playing alongside their daughters and for some, their granddaughters.

Mothers, daughters and sons (males are welcome to play until 16 years) can experience together what team sports offer and many families participate in this special opportunity every Saturday.

The situation of playing alongside generations of family members is unique in sport.

The special bonds of family are tightened even further and many very special memories have been created on the vigoro field.

The Association encourages all women of any age to join us in this unique opportunity.

The 2021/2022 season begins on Saturday (October 9). Contact The Fassifern Executive, Jan Dover President, Krissie Sorensen Vice President, Susan Parker Secretary and Kerryn Parker Treasurer.
