A Very Good Boy - touching on dogs through art and culture through the ages - by Felicity Smith

MOST faithful of friends, dogs have been our constant companions for 40,000 years.
Dogs are represented in every aspect of our eastern and western cultural history. From literature to film, music to painting and sculpture, dogs appear by our side - man’s best friend.
An examination of canine mitochondrial DNA has revealed that the dogs we know and love split from wolf lineage some 40,000 years ago in what has been described as ‘a single domestication event’.
This ‘domestication event’ would have been an absolute boon for both man and dog. Even today, the life expectancy of a dog in the wild is around four years, whereas living with humans allows most to live 12 years on average. A significant win for dogs. For our part, dogs have helped humans on hunts for food, and earned their share of the spoils.
