Janu: The headdresses of the Ejagham or Bale peoples in the south eastern forest region of Nigeria are worn during initiations or funerals. There are three overall types: helmet masks that cover the wearer’s head entirely, masks that cover only the face, and headdresses that, like this one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, are attached to basketry caps worn on top of the head. It dates to the 19th to 20th century.
