Local rural firefighters and landholders will continue the bushfire battle at Carney’s Creek, today.

“Some of the locals have put in super-human efforts,” reported Boonah Rural Fires First Officer, Trevor Turner.

“Men like Marshall and Geoffrey Chalk seem unstoppable – I don’t think they’ve had much of a break since the fire started.

“Actually, I’m very proud of the efforts of our local rural firies – they have done outstanding work since the fires began.”

He also expressed his devastation at the amount of country blackened by the fires.

“The rainforest along Hardcastle Road has been annihilated – it’s dreadful to see it.”

Yesterday and throughout the night, rural firefighters, landholders and National Parks crews work to establish new containment lines and strengthen the ones already in place.

“Last night, we back burned a 4.2km stretch beside Carney’s Creek Road to help contain one of the fire fronts coming from the direction of Hardcastle Road,” Trevor said.

“We did another back burn along a 1.1km section west of Carney’s Creek Road through to Chalk Road to try and tie off another fire front.”

He added that work would continue today on completing containment lines to direct the third fire front moving from Kinnane’s cliffs towards The Head Road.

Firebreaks are also continuing to be pushed through to hold the fire front coming down through Francis Creek.

“Today, will be about completing fire breaks and strengthening existing ones and mopping up along the fire paths.”

Roads which are expected to remain closed due to smoke and tree fall hazard are The Head Road and Carney Creek Road (from the intersections with Fletcher Road and Hardcastle Road).

• This is Day 73 of fires in the Fassifern. The Carney’s Creek fire is a new bushfire which began on Monday afternoon beside the road on Hardcastle Road.
