Drivers asked to keep an eye out for puggles, as echidnas breed

SCENIC RIM - Drivers are being asked to keep an eye out for echidnas as the charismatic monotremes enter into breeding season.

From September to January, mother echidnas carry their babies, known as puggles, in shallow pouches.

The tiny little creatures can be thrown from her pouch if she is hit by a car some distance, onto the road or the surrounding area.

They may be as small as a golf ball and unable to vocalise, making them difficult to spot.

Echidnas are often spotted on the Boonah Fassifern Road, with an echidna trail thought to come from Mount French.

But Wildcare Australia is calling on all drivers to take care. They say to wrap any puggles in a small towel and call for help immediately.

Wildcare Rescue runs a 24/7 hotline which can be reached on 07 5527 2444.
