Financial support extended to students
1 min read

The Federal Government is expanding the eligibility criteria for the fortnightly $550 Coronavirus supplement to Australians receiving student support payments.

“Students in the region can be reassured they will be supported during this tough time,” said Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz.

“We’re so lucky to have access to a number of great University campuses, USQ in Toowoomba, UQ Gatton, USQ Springfield and of course, Griffith and Bond on the Gold Coast.

“To support those students, the Australian Government has announced changes to the Coronavirus supplement, which will benefit those on Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY and ABSTUDY.”

Mr Buchholz noted that many students would be disadvantaged by loss of jobs in the hospitality and other industries.

“If you work a few hours each week to supplement your income, be it at the local café, takeaway or pub - those hours are likely to be gone either now or in the coming weeks and months,” he said.

“There is going to be a cost impost as a result of new restrictions, through a loss of income or increasing cost of living or changes to study arrangements.

“Many students will need help, particularly those studying at UQ Gatton or USQ Toowoomba where they are living away from home and need support to cover additional cost of living pressures.”
