Long drought ended for rare back-up … “He’s just warming up”

Two races in two days? After 35 starts without a win, that was the recipe for success for Beaudesert trainer Kenneth “Spike” Deacon and his big gelding San Bernardino.

Last Wednesday at Eagle Farm, the six-year-old ran eighth, 10 lengths behind the winner Fiorente Star in a maiden over 1400m.

After checking him over, Deacon decided to push on the next day to Ipswich racetrack where San Bernardino lined up in the Sirromet Maiden Plate (1680m).

Ridden by Brooke Ainsworth, San Bernardino ($5) beat Spiritual ($8) by a half-head with favourite Fletcher's Mutiny ($3) a nose away in third.
