Tamborine Mountain’s bid to join Gold Coast City may be dead in the water if Scenic Rim Council follows the Mayor’s opposition to a boundary change.

A Department of Local Government spokesman said the process for a boundary change would require the support of both Gold Coast and Scenic Rim councils.

“Before any boundary change can be made, the proposal would need to show that it has the support of the community, the support of the local governments involved, and that both local governments will remain financially sustainable,” he said.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has welcomed the household plebiscite conducted by Tamborine Mountain councillor Derek Swanborough and said it was ultimately a matter for Tamborine and the State Government – “not a decision for our council”.
