A quirky three-bedroom river front home on offer in Karalee

A quirky family home comprising 11 circular domes is on the market in Karalee for more than $1.5 million.

The ‘Bubble House,’ concept is the brainchild of architect and homeowner, Graham Birchall, after he wrote his thesis about circular architecture in his final year of study.

Mr Birchall said he worked on the home himself, designing the domes and at times, the circular furniture to match.

The build commenced on Father’s Day in 1983 and took ten years to complete.

Each dome ranges from four metres to eight metres in diameter.

The unique home is located at 79 Elanora Way and overlooks the river.

The kitchen was built by a carpenter and a traditional boat builder who collaborated on the project to complete a practical space within the constraints of the curved structure.

The home is equipped with specifically designed remote controlled circular shutters which represent the iris of an eye.

The main entrance leads into level one of the home which opens out into the kitchen, dining and living areas as well as the media, library, and office rooms. There is also a golf tee outside.

Underneath level one, the basement features the wine cellar as well as the remote controlled four-car garage.

The top level contains a private office with a kitchenette as well as the three bedrooms, an ensuite, a family bathroom, sitting room and terrace balcony.

A circular staircase sits inside the home and has two water features beside it which have a dual purpose - offering tranquillity and an air conditioning system.

“I just wanted to see if it would work,” said Mr Birchall.

“And it did.”
