Rainfall traps 11 people at Scenic Rim campground
2 min read

Campers trapped by heavy rain south of Canungra have been airlifted food by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter after the path home from their Sarabah campsite was cut off by flooded rivers.

Gold Coast Lifesaving Services Supervisor Nathan Fife the 11 campers became trapped after the weekends heavy rainfall isolated the roads.

“The group of 11 campers, which includes children, became stranded following the heavy rainfall which cut road access to the campsite,” he said.

“The group crossed multiple water crossings to get to the campsite prior to the bad weather, but since the downpour the crossings have become flooded.

The campers called emergency services the morning of Tuesday December 15, it was then organised for the Westpac helicopter to deliver the food and water.

“After the group called the Queensland Police Service yesterday morning arrangements were made by the Local Disaster Management Group for the supplies to be purchased and delivered to the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter base,” Mr Fife said.

“The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter then successfully made the trip into the hinterland with the supplies.”

Mr Fife said the campers were safe and would be able to leave the campsite once the water levels at the crossings subsided.

“All campers are in good spirits and were thankful for the delivery, they are on high ground and have phone reception,” he said.

“The food and water supplies will get them through the next few days while they wait for the water to subside.”
