The young buck and the veteran: locals light up Boonah Campdraft

A veteran competitor rode home with a swagful of victories in an emotional weekend at the annual Boonah Campdraft, while a young talent burst onto the scene with a ride that floored judges.

Milbong’s Craig Sheppard swept the three adult competitions to which he was eligible, claiming victory in the Novice, Open and Restricted Open Drafts riding Diman, Chattahoochee and Donrica Miss Dior respectively.

Boonah Rodeo Association committee member Phil Gutzke said Sheppard won those events “convincingly” and rode “spectacularly”.

“His horses and he were just tuned in,” Gutzke said.

“If we had a man of the match, it was Craig Sheppard, that was for sure.”

But if the veteran’s victories were convincing, no superlatives could describe a win at the other end of the age spectrum.

Local lad Alex Wilson, 13, scored 85 points atop his horse Salty in the Juv
