Roadworks underway at Thagoona, but the priority is wrong says resident

THAGOONA resident Steve Applegate recently met with Crs Kate Kunzelmann and Russell Milligan in a bid to get some clarity around roadworks on Adelong Avenue in Thagoona.

Steve was advocating that as Adelong Avenue was a main road and should be prioritised for upgrades in preference to smaller, less busier roads in Thagoona.

“Adelong Avenue is bitumen with dirt on either side and there has been little to no maintenance on it over the 18 years that I lived here,” he said.

“Anybody who drives on this road would see that it not only causes wear and tear on their vehicle but in some areas it is dangerous and the potholes are beyond bad.

“I approached previous councillor David Pahlke in 2016 about these concerns and as a result of our meeting rehabilitation on Adelong Avenue was listed in 2017.

“I was told distinctly that Ipswich City Council had put money aside to build the kerb and channel which was estimated at $5,000,000 and it was proposed for reconstruction in 2018 and 2019.”

Relief at the news turned into frustration as four years later, the work is still not done.

Following his meeting with Cr Kunzelmann and Cr Milligan, Steve said he was told that works will start on Adelong Avenue in three years’ time.

“Well, what can I say, it really is too late, we have been promised this for years, what else can we do,” he said.

Cr Milligan said that there were three main works that take place, rehabilitation, reconstruction and resurfacing.

“Council is undertaking resurfacing only on Banyula Road, Carara Avenue, Kanandah Court, Kipara Road and Thagoona - Haigslea Road in Thagoona,” he said.

“Resurfacing fixes where there is collapse of the road base, the section is dug up and rehabilitated, before the final stage of resealing takes place on top.”

But Steve said this was not the answer.

“Adelong Avenue should be cleaned up before these small roads. Buses, railway trucks and sewerage trucks use this road on a daily basis. Something needs to be done,” he said.
