A kangaroo has had a lucky escape after being shot with an arrow and left to die in the latest in a string of similar acts of animal cruelty. 

In a graphic photograph released by RSPCA Qld on Tuesday, the Eastern Grey Kangaroo can be seen with the arrow deeply embedded in its side above its right forelimb, in obvious distress. 

The roo was shot on Friday.

The kangaroo was rescued by wildlife carers and taken to Wacol’s Wildlife Hospital. 

Wildlife veterinarians, who dubbed the roo “Jimothy”, removed the arrow and treated the marsupial before releasing it back into the wild.

“Jimothy was very lucky,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty. 

“Animals and birds that have been shot with arrows always die slowly and painfully if they’re not found. Very, very rarely do they die quickly."

RSPCA Qld said it had received several call outs in recent months about birds, wallabies and kangaroos shot with arrows. 

“We’re urging anyone with information to come forward,” Beatty said.

Jimothy was the second kangaroo shot in the Kooralbyn area.
