The Red Intuition Rose was a winner at the October Garden Club meeting.
Stunning roses everywhere to be seen in the Boonah District Garden Club’s last meeting in Sharon Wallace’s garden.
Her secret?
Cow manure and water, plus lots of TLC, I suspect.
Apart from roses there were beautiful hibiscus of every colour and her lawn was even green in parts!
Lots of hard work on hers and Brian’s part, which was appreciated by members and visitors at what will be the last garden meeting of the Boonah District Garden Club.
From now on meetings will be at Simon’s Tavern each month with planned garden visit days during the year. This change came about for many reasons discussed by club members during the year, but mainly to accommodate our ageing membership, who despite being enthusiastic gardeners are not up to hosting 70 plus people any more, and of course the lack of water.
The October meeting was further enhanced by the display of succulents by Cherie and Lainey Wright, and if the present conditions continue, cacti and succulents may be all we can grow!
Cherie and Lainey showed how any container from old teapots to hollow logs may be used to grow them successfully with the help of sheep manure and a little water.
Lainey’s arrangements were winners at the Kalbar Show this year.
October’s club show table winners of the cacti and succulent sections were Robyn Freiberg and Sandra Orr, whose stunning cactus flower also won the single cut flower award.
Once again Peter and Win Holmes were rewarded for their gardening achievements in several classes, taking out the potted orchid, best potted plant with a Pepperonia, best flowering shrub with an Echium, ‘Pride of Madeira’ best cut of multiple flowers a ‘Hannah Gordon’ rose and best vase of flowers with some Candytuft.
Val Eacott won two sections with her Heartsease winning best pot plant in flower and a Viresia Bromeliad winning the leaf section.
The fabulous ‘Red Intuition’ rose was declared the winner of a large and colourful rose display and it was grown by Val Noe.
The best fruit was Eric Regeling’s pineapple and best vegetable was a capsicum grown by Teresa Ward. The Desert Rose covered in flowers won the encouragement award for Eric and Elaine Regeling.
Members were reminded to sign up for next week’s Christmas party which will be the Garden Club’s last function for 2019.
We will begin the New Year with the club’s meeting on January 22 at Simons Tavern, with the usual show and trade tables and an Australia Day theme.
