Scooping a squadron of pelicans

Stories abound of the massive migration of waterbirds to Lake Eyre since the usually drought-dry salt flats began to fill to capacity as the floodwaters meandered down from south western Queensland. Hundreds of thousands of pelicans are estimated to have flown into nest on the lake’s now verdant islands. However, it seems that not all pelicans made the long flight as photographer LYLE RADFORD captured this image on Sunday at Wyaralong dam. Or perhaps they were on their return flight and chose to stop at the lake to gorge on the ever present carp and tilapia. While waiting for the pelicans to group up in an orderly manner, Lyle did some brain teasing by trying to remember all the different collective nouns for a large group of pelicans. Answers he came up with were – Scoop and Pouch (referring to the scooping action of their beaks and their beak’s underslung pouches); Squadron (in reference to their flying formation) and Pod (referring to their preference for living in a group).
