Fire ant program’s ‘unexpected’ push for more than original $411M

A $411.4 million effort to eradicate fire ants is seeking more money amid an internal review that could lead to increased scrutiny of the decade-long program.

The super pests are only found in South East Queensland and the pitch for money from other states and the Federal Government is likely to raise eyebrows, given the state of their Covid-19 ravaged economies.

The Guardian & Tribune understands that, should the additional money not be forthcoming, the program might have to scale back its efforts or turn instead to cost-sharing with affected industries, such as agriculture, and community-led baiting programs.  

A staff newsletter said a review panel had been commissioned by the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program (NRIFAEP) steering committee “to look at our current situation and options for moving forward in the most cost effective-way”.
