Musical a first for new hall fit out

SCHOOL of Rock is rolling in to Boonah High School.
The school typically presents a stage show every two years but over the past couple of years Covid had shut plans down.
“Then we were supposed to have [School of Rock] last year but were notified our hall was being completely refurbished and had to postpone it,” Kristen Murphy the school’s deputy principal said.
“The last musical we did was Annie and the decision to do School of Rock was deliberate because the students developed their own rock band.
“We don’t have a school instrumental band anymore but there are very talented students in regard to drumming, guitar and singing.
“So that’s kind of where it started, we had this awesome rock band and thought ‘what else can we do with it?’.
“And that was when the idea to do a musical that was all about students and rock music was borne.”
School of Rock is a 2003 screenplay starring actor Jack Black as a substitute teacher at an uptight elementary private school.
Black has been kicked out of a rock band and decides to try to turn the class he is teaching into one in order to win $20,000 prize money in a local band competition.
“The band for this musical is made up of students and teachers,” Ms Murphy said.
“We had a musical camp last weekend where students bedded down in the hall overnight, ran through scenes and watched the movie.
“The Saturday was spent doing rehearsals.”
She said while not all children had parts in the musical or knew how to play an instrument, there were other aspects they became involved in.
“We’ve got kids in the backstage crew, kids that enjoy construction are building sets and erecting stages...art students are painting backgrounds,” she said.
“Some students are sewing costumes and others are on the hair and make up team, everyone is able to be involved and I think that is the best thing about it.
