Boonah campdraft cancelled

The Boonah Annual Campdraft has been cancelled because of the ongoing drought.

Boonah Rodeo and Campdraft Association president Phil Gutzke said the event which usually ran over two days in October was not the only one cancelled.

“It’s fairly typical what’s happening around the region, most of the big drafts that have been run have been cancelled due to the drought,” Mr Gutzke said.

“The drought is terribly widespread.”

He said they would usually draw competitors from all over north-east New South Wales and from south-east Queensland.

“We usually look for about 1200 head of cattle all donated for the day for the use from local graziers in the area.

“Probably in excess of 1000 competitors would normally enter over the two days and it’s run under the Australian Campdraft Association, so people get points.

“It’s an important event because it all goes towards the end of the year champions and things.

“And due to the drought and availability of cattle we’ve had to cancel.”

He said the association, which also runs the Boonah Rodeo on October 4, is relying solely on that event for their income this year.

“Last year we didn’t run a full draft but we got some water later in the year, we had some rain and some relief and we ran a twilight draft, a novice draft.

“Over the past decade the campdraft has been cancelled a few times, sometimes for the rain but mostly for the lack thereof.

“But this year we are asking people to come support the rodeo, we’ve tried to support everything as locally as we can, so we can keep going on in the future.”
