Covid concerns force Fassifern to miss state titles again
2 min read

QUEENSLAND Vigoro Association delegates have put the well-being of Fassifern players, coaches and supporters first by cancelling this year's state senior and junior titles.

Long-serving association president Janet Savage said everything was considered in attempting to reschedule this month's senior and junior championships that were to be played in Ipswich.

However, QVA delegates from Fassifern, Ipswich and Cairns made the decision “mainly due to health and safety reasons” surrounding Covid.

“We said we could reschedule the state titles for April . . . but there were just too many clashes,” Savage said.

That included Cairns having a touch football carnival that impacted vigoro playing numbers.

“The main issue was the uncertainty of Covid,” the president said.

“Any player that comes could get it and that depletes your player numbers. We can't just call in players from all over the state.

“It was just in the little bit too hard basket.”

It was the second year in a row that the state titles were called off.

Fassifern association president Jan Dover accepted the right decision was made.

“We thought that might be the outcome considering the current situation,” Dover said.

“When you've got teams travelling and there's accommodation and flights involved, it becomes pretty complex.

“It's just the best for all players at this stage.”

Savage, who has been association president for 19 years, said delegates would meet again in early February to decide the host city and dates for the 2023 State Titles.

The short-term focus switches back to the Fassifern competition where top two sides Funtastics (18 points) and Rebels (17 points) are scheduled to play on Saturday.

The January 22 showdown is the only game to start the new year.

The Fassifern junior competition is set to return in February.

Current points: Senior – Funtastics 18, Rebels 17, Aussies 3.

Junior: Rebels 25, Terminators 17, Funtastics 1.
